Congress Passes Budget With Commitment to Health Care
It took thousands of calls from activists across the country, but both houses of Congress finally passed budget resolutions, based on President Obama's proposal, that will create a reserve fund for health care reform without increasing the deficit. This victory is a good sign that Congress is serious about answering President Obama's challenge to pass a comprehensive health care reform bill this year.
Yet, there is still plenty of work that we need to do before reform is reality. We have to urge our legislators to devise a proposal that matches our principles for reform, and guarantees quality, affordable health care for every American. Already, our opposition is lining up to take their shots at any reform plan that significantly chanages the status quo. You can't walk out of a Senator's office these days without bumping into a lobbyist from the insurance, pharmaceutical, or other for-profit health care industries.
But we know we can win. In the final days leading up to the votes on the budget, activists like you made over 7,000 phone calls to our legislators' offices and we recruited over 2,500 new people to take action. If we keep growing at that rate, we will win health care reform this year.
